Biography

Bulliard studied medicine in Langres, and in hospices in Clairvaux and Paris, where he set up his own practice. He is the discoverer of many of our most well-known mushrooms, including some of the most popular edible ones. I have always liked the fact that he named both Boletus edulis and Tylopilus felleus. As his herbarium has not been preserved, the pictures in his big book serve as "iconotypes" for those species.

Bolbitius titubansFrom the date of his death, I had always assumed that he was executed in the French Revolution, but seems to be incorrect: Redhead (2001) says that he died in a hunting accident, and Dörfelt & Heklau just say that "his early death remains a mystery."

He is one of the few (old-time) mycologists with a nickname, Pierre; he is listed in most libraries as Pierre Bulliard. I have no idea why.

Selected Publications

Jean Baptiste Francois Bulliard (1780 - 1798) Herbier de la France (Guide to the Herbs of France) 13 vol.

Jean Baptiste Francois Bulliard (1783) Dictionnaire de botanique (Dictionary of Botany)
An attempt to give pictured definitions for Latin and French botanical terms. Mostly what it does for us now is show how firmly rooted these terms are in their original applications to vascular plants. I discuss this a bit in the entry on natural language.

Jean Baptiste Francois Bulliard (1791 - 1812) Histoire des Champignons de la France (Natural History of the Mushrooms of France)
I wonder how all these books kept coming out after Bulliard had been killed.
