studies natural science in Heidelberg and with Schwendener in Berlin

1888     graduates from Berlin with a thesis on lichen apothecia

1890     assistant to Brefeld in Münster

1892     returns to Berlin, becomes an assistant in the botanical garden; holds an ascending series of posts in the botanical museum

1894     appointed privatdozent to the philosophy department at Berlin

1902     promoted to professor
