Biography

1854     January 26, born in Raisinville, Michigan
entered Olivet College

1884     January, transfers to Cornell University

1885     graduates from Cornell, appointed assistant professor of entomology and general zoology, University of North Carolina, does research on trap-door spiders

1886     publishes spider research, appointment upgraded to associate professorship; active in research on "economic entomology"

1888     leaves UNC to become professor of botany and zoology at University of South Carolina

1889     leaves USC to become professor of biology and botany at Alabama Polytechnic Institute; becomes interested in plant pathology

1892     returns to Cornell as assistant professor of botany; moves up the ladder rapidly, becoming department chairman in 1896; in charge of Cornell University Agricultural Experiment Station until 1906

George Francis AtkinsonAs you can see below, Atkinson is responsible for naming some of our most characteristic American fungal flora. He was also a researcher of great distinction, and edited (at one time or another) the Botanical Gazette, the Botanisches Centralblatt, the Centralblatt für Bacteriologie und Parasitenkunde, and The New Systematic Botany of North America.
