studies at Albany State Normal School and New York State Normal School

1888     teaches high school in New York and Nebraska

1897     earns B.Sc. from University of Nebraska

1901     earns Masters from University of Nebraska, goes to work at the Bureau of Plant Industry

1906     moves to Washington DC

1923     appointed director of the Division of Mycology and Disease Survey

1927     collecting expedition to Hawaii

1928     collecting expedition to Hawaii (some people get all the breaks!)

Dörfelt & Heklau say that, while still a school teacher, Shear issued a set of exsiccati under the title "New York Fungi"; but they don't give a date for it.
