ectomycete, endomycete

(pl. ectomycetes, endomycetes)

An endomycete is a fungus that lives on the inside of the body of another organism. An ectomycete would be one that lives on the outside.

There are also two taxa that might also lead to a fungus being called an endomycete: the order Endomycetales, in the obsolete class Hemiascomycetes, and the class Endomycetes von Arx's grouping for the yeasts, Taphrinales, Exobasidiales, and Ustilaginales. I don't think that either of these is used any more.
