graduates from the university of Leipzig, is apprenticed in his father's publishing house and that of R. Hartmann

1870 studies natural science in Leipzig

1871 becomes the joint publisher of the journal Hedwigia

1872 studies natural science in Munich

1873 studies natural science in Halle; earns PhD there

1875 docent for botany at the Polytechnic Confederation in Zurich

Winter did studies on

the mushroom flora of Missouri, Brazil, and Portugal
the Ustilaginaceae and Sordariaceae
and did anatomic and morphological studies of the crustose lichens
