Sterling was a collector from Trenton New Jersey, whose collections substantially enriched the holdings of the Lloyd Museum and the New Jersey State Museum. He was a founding member of the American Philatelic Society (1886), and also collected shells and coins. He worked as the director of the inheritance tax department for the state comptroller.
