1814 earns MD, becomes a member of the academy of sciences in Munich
1817 - 1820 botanist on an expedition to Brazil
appointed fellow of the academy (of sciences), then assistant curator of the Munich botanical gardens
1826 appointed professor of botany
1832 promoted to senior curator
