Tylopilus chromapes

Back to the Eleanor Yarrow Index

This mushroom has been a real stumper to classify. It has the dark bristles (scabers) on the stalk like the genus Leccinum, but it has the wrong colored spores for that genus. On the other hand, it has the pinkish-brown spores of the genus Tylopilus (which can be seen beginning to color the pore surface on the underside of the cap), but lacks the dark colors and bitter taste of most members of that genus. You can find it in books under both of those genera, and even as Boletus chromapes. It is distinguished by the above-listed features, plus its red to pink cap and yellow base of the stalk. It is quite tasty.
