All meetings will be held at the Friends' Meeting House in Purchase, NY [see directions below]. Meetings are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and are open, free of charge, to the public. Bring samples of your fungi finds to all of our evening programs and we will help you with identification.

Tuesday, April 15 Medicinal Mushrooms in Daily Diet – by Elinoar Shavit

The uses of mushrooms to cure disease and promote good health have age-old traditions. This talk focuses on medicinal mushrooms and mushroom compounds, the scientific and evidence-based studies that support traditional usages, and effective ways to incorporate mushrooms into our daily life to promote good health.

Wednesday, May 14 Microscopy: The Internal Structure & Beauty of Mushrooms – by Bill Bakaitis

Even if you don’t own a microscope, knowing what it reveals is critically important to understanding mushrooms. Using dramatic microscopic and macroscopic views of fungi, this talk will cover how a microscope is used, the structure and function of fungal anatomy, and why the microscope is essential to identifying mushrooms to species.

Tuesday, July 1 Parasites and Look-alikes – by Gary Lincoff

The sub-title of this talk is “what some mushrooms have to put up with.” Focusing on insects and fungi that attack mushrooms, and on the look-alikes that cause confusion in identification, Gary Lincoff, author of The Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms, will explore the existential dilemmas of being a mushroom.

Directions to Friends’ Purchase Meeting House:

From I-684 - Take Exit 2 to stoplight at Rte 120 ( Purchase St.). Turn right and go 1 mile to sharp left turn. The Friends' Meeting House is on the left at the corner.

From I-287 - Take Exit 8 (westbound) or Exit 8E (eastbound) and follow signs for Anderson Hill Rd and SUNY Purchase. Take Anderson Hill Rd to Rte 120, turn left and go about 2 miles to intersection with Lake St. The Friends' Meeting House is on the right just before the intersection.
