Sphaerobolus stellatus

Back to the Eleanor Yarrow Index

This is a strange little thing, which is probably not officially in the Bird's Nest Fungi anymore. Rather than the usual spore packets inside a "nest", it produces a one big round spore mass inside a surrounding rind (the peridium). The peridium then ruptures in a star-like pattern and contracts, shooting out the spore mass like a cannonball. The photo shows many individuals in various stages of this process.
