Russula mariae

Back to the Eleanor Yarrow Index

One of the few Russulas that is common and distributed nation-wide. It can be recognized by the frequent magenta color on the stem; the fact that the colored layer atop the cap will peel easily almost to the center; the cap margin, which is usually striate in maturity (but not in this picture); and the cap color: deep purplish magenta to yellowish cream, usually with a white bloom on it, like a grape. This is one of the few gilled mushrooms that has an American common name: "plummies" (from the color of the cap), as reported by Ernst Both. It is quite tasty.
