Pilobilus crystalinus

Back to the Eleanor Yarrow Index

Our other Zygomycete in this collection, Pilobilus grows its dark wad of spores on top of a crystalline lens. The lens focuses light back towards an eye-spot at the top of the stalk, and the stalk twists so that the spore mass is aimed at the lightest area around. After a while, water pressure builds up in the lens and fires off the spore mass to start a new colony of Pilobilus.
