Panus rudis

Back to the Eleanor Yarrow Index

One of my nostalgic favorites, this under-appreciated mushroom is both fuzzy and purple, two things that are found together too rarely in the natural world. Younger ones are more purplish that the pictured ones, but also less fuzzy. Okay, the ones in the picture on the right aren't purple at all (as they get older, they fade to this color) but the ones on the left are still showing tinges of it.
