Leotia

Back to the Eleanor Yarrow Index

This doesn't look like a cup fungus, but technically it is one, just with the cup turned inside out and sitting on top of a stalk. There are three generally recognized species of Leotias (commonly known as Jelly Babies) in this country: Leotia lubrica (top two photos) is all yellow; Leotia atrovirens is all dark green; and Leotia viscosa (bottom photo) is half and half.

At least, that's what your field guides probably say. In the last few years, there's been a growing recognition that the colors are very variable, and its easy to find specimens that are "in between". So now, they are officially just considered one species which has varying degrees of dark green in it. I don't know which species name is "the winner" (supplanting the others), so for now I'm just listing them all under Leotia.
