Lactarius lignyotis

Back to the Eleanor Yarrow Index

Lactarius is a genus of chalky-stemmed mushrooms that exude a latex when they are broken, especially from the gills. This one, along with the more famous Lactarius volemus and Lactarius hygrophoroides, is in a group that have abundant white, sticky latex that often has a fishy smell, and a velvety texture to the cap. The cap color of Lactarius lignyotis ranges from a warm chocolate brown to deep black, with white gills and a stalk that is usually a slightly lighter version of the cap color.
