Lactarius aquifluus

Back to the Eleanor Yarrow Index

Lactarius is a genus of chalky-stemmed mushrooms that exude a latex when they are broken, especially from the gills. This one, along with Lactarius camphoratus and several others not pictured here, is in a group that have reddish-brown coloration; clear, colorless latex (hence aquifluus, "water-fluid"); and a distinctive smell that some people perceive as sweet and some people perceive as spicy.
