Fuligo septica

Back to the Eleanor Yarrow Index

This common and largest of all wild slime molds can be seen here streaming into the yellow mass it assumes when it begins to develop spores. This mass will turn a chunky pinkish beige overnight, at which point it begins to earn its common name, Dog's Vomit Slime Mold. By this point it is dry and powdery; if you poke it with a stick, the light-colored covering will flake off, exposing the black spores, which will blow away.
