Flammulina velutipes

Back to the Eleanor Yarrow Index

One common name for this mushroom, The Winter Mushroom, refers to its habit of fruiting during the winter, during brief thaws. Others, like Velvet Shank or Velvet Foot (which is the translation of the species name) refer to the black hairs that sheath the lower portion of the stalk (visible in a few specimens here). It grows on wood, and has an bright orange to brownish orange slimy cap.
