Boletus subvelutipes

Back to the Eleanor Yarrow Index

A poster child for the Luridae group of boletes, this mushroom shows the over reddish coloration, the fat stem, and the yellow flesh that instantly bruises dark blue - - so dark as to appear black in this photo. Besides the several blued areas on the cap, there is a blued stripe on the pore surface on the left.

This mushroom is distinguished from the European Boletus luridus (after which the group is named) by the patches of short thick red fur present at the base of the stalk (the deeper red coloration in the photo).
