Boletus bicolor var. bicolor

Back to the Eleanor Yarrow Index

This is the flagship species of a group of boletes that are red on top of the cap and yellow elsewhere. They also tend to have a smell that some people perceive as sweet and others perceive as spicy. This one can be distinguished from the others because only the pore surface stains blue, not the flesh; and the pores are always very shallow, even when the mushroom gets to be very large.
