Biography

An excellent botanist at the New York Botanical Gardens. He somehow managed to write the first complete floras of the southeastern states in the 20th century while being worked like a dog as an administrator and chore boy for Nathaniel Lord Britton. The University of North Carolina assembled a team of botanists towards the end of the 20th century to try and duplicate his feat (and do it "right"); I'm not sure if they've finished yet.

However, most of his work is now unintelligible due to Britton's (mandatory) adherance to the American Code of Botanical Nomenclature. For a good appreciation of him, see Isley.
