Biography

1869     January 1, born in Philadelphia

1892     earns Bachelor of Science degree from University of Pennsylvania

1893     earns PhD from University of Pennsylvania

appointed instructor at University of Pennsylvania, holds an ascending series of posts there

1907     marries Helen B Cole

1923     Helen dies

1929     April 29, dies in Philadelphia

Harshberger was mainly a plant geographer, his dissertation being "Maize: A Botanical and Economic Study." He found time for a few publicaitons on the fungi, though. Humphrey notes that "he was a popular teacher and a zealous conservationist", and collected many specimens for the university herbarium on collecting expeditions in North and South America, and in Europe.
