Pierre-Joseph van Benedén: “Commensalists and Parasites of the Animal Kingdom” (1875)

This is the book in which van Benedén first presented his notions of commensalism and mutualism, to complement the more traditional notion of parasitism. It also contains many observations on symbionts -- especially marine ones -- and his opinion on several of the general biological questions of the day.

Original Citation

van Benedén, Pierre-Joseph (1875) Les commensaux et les parasites dans le regne animal [Commensalists and Parasites of the Animal Kingdom]. His original publication.

van Benedén, Pierre-Joseph (1876) Die Schmarotzer des Thierreichs [Parasites of the Animal Kingdom], Internationale wissenschaftliche Bibliothek, vol. 18. This is the citation from de Bary's paper in this anthology.

van Benedén, Pierre-Joseph (1876) Animal Parasites and Messmates, Intenational Science Series, vol. 19.

I don't know why the volume number is one higher in the English-language edition.

Aega

New Zealand Cirolanidae

Antarctic Aegas

Anilocra

A small but colorful picture from ocean.com

A better photo but not actually on the fish

Argulus

This Argulus page, by William Poly, has a nice color picture of the well-named Argulus multicolor. Includes a story about a confused Argulus that attached itself to a boy's eye by mistake. Ow!

Bothriocephalus

Some technical pictures of Bothriocephalus

Caligus

A large PDF file. It may take a while to download if you have a slow connection, but it has lots of information and some nice photos of the caligi.

Histriobdella

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to locate any Histriobdella pictures. Please let me know if you find any!

Nemertian worms

A large, colorful species

And another one. Note the discussion trying to identify the worm in the picture lower down on the page.

Pinnothere

Some very cute crabs found when their host shell washed up on the beach

Pontonia

Some nice photos and citations

Udonella

This page, at the Paris Institute of Parasitology (Parisitology?) shows an Udonella on its Caligus host, as described in van Benedén's article
This page (the lower link on the left of the above page) shows one of van Benedén's original drawings of the interior (mostly) of the Udonella.

Errata

p. 18: the footnote for Cirolana spinipes, at the very beginning of the page, should be 8 instead of 9. The name Oega, later in the same paragraph, should also bear the footnote 8. And the footnote 8 for the word "anilocrian", in the next-to-last paragraph of the previous page, should carry a little note saying that the footnote is given on p. 18, not 17.
