I. The Maine Mycological Association (MMA) is a group of amateur and professional fanciers of wild mushrooms and other fungi. It was formed in 1985 from a workshop conducted at the Maine Audubon Society by Dr. Sam Ristich. MMA now has over two hundred members. We publish a quarterly newsletter, “Mainely Mushrooms,” and conduct several forays each month during the better weather. We also hold monthly winter meetings featuring presentations by MMA members and Maine scientists and advanced students on scientific subjects related to mycology.

Membership is $8 a year for individuals ($10 for “joint” memberships). Members receive the newsletter and invitations to all forays, winter meetings, and some other events.

This website is intended to assist MMA in the conduct of its various mycological activities. Its functions include disseminating information to current and would-be members, and facilitating communication with persons who would like to contact us. MMA will occasionally post its own work products, but we have no intention that our site will serve as a means for locating and/or accessing the wealth of mycological resources available on the internet. There are a number of excellent websites that already perform this valuable service, including our host site, Mushroom the Journal.

For information, questions, and comments please contact us at mmacontact@hotmail.com

II. Our newsletter features a mycological journal, “Sam’s Corner,” describing MMA and other mycological happenings written by Dr. Sam Ristich, MMA’s founder and spiritual leader. All issues of “Sam’s Corner” beginning in 1986 and continuing through 2000 have been published with illustrations, historical appendices, and extensive indexing. This attractive volume is available by mail order from V. F. Thomas Co., its publisher. For more information, click here.

III. Issues of “Sam’s Corner” appearing in our newsletter after the publication mentioned above have been copied for your enjoyment. These begin in 2001, and continue to the present, as available. Check it out.

IV. MMA has a considerable library of mycology-related books, monographs, newsletters of numerous clubs (not complete), historical materials, and misc. Our catalog is available to the public. Click here for the MMA Library.

V. MMA Current Activities.
Please use the MMA contact e-mail address to request a current calendar of MMA meetings and forays. The calendar will include event descriptions and dates, locations and directions, and phone numbers for questions and information about weather cancellations. In most cases, you will receive your calendar by return e-mail within 24 hours of your request. Please tell us a little about yourself and your interest in mushrooms in your request. If you are able to attend one of our events (just show up, no specific permission required - or call to verify if you prefer), please introduce yourself. Special help for beginners will be provided if requested.
