sp.

Terms discussed: spp., ssp.

sp. is an abbreviation for "species". It's used when you know what the genus of a mushroom is, but not the species. For example, if I found something that I knew was an Agaricus, but I didn't know what species it was, I might call it Agaricus sp..

If you find more than one of a genus, they get abbreviated spp. or ssp., as in "we found 3 Entoloma ssp." I don't know which one is correct (or, really, if either is correct), but I've seen both, and you will probably see both here.
