1864 trains as a "folk-school teacher" in Eisleben
1867 teaches in Thondorf bei Mansfeld
1874 - 1877 studies natural science and philosophy at the university of Berlin
1878 earns PhD at the university of Halle, becomes assistant in Berlin
1881 appointed privatdozent at the land-management high school and the university of Berlin
1883 appointed privatdozent and curator of the cryptogamic collection at the university of Halle
promoted to associate professor
1899 appointed profesor of botany and director of the botanical gardens in Münster
Zopf worked mostly with lichens, doing the first important biochemical and chemotaxonomic work on them
