Biography

born in Finland

studies natural history and medicine (where?)

1847     graduates

1852 - 1858     practices medicine in various countries, notably in England, where he works on lichens with Sir William Jackson Hooker at Kew

1858     appointed to the chair for botany at the university of Helsinki

1863     returns to Paris (where he had practiced during his wanderings)

Nylander described over 5000 new species of lichen from all over the world, in over 300 publications (including a few on ants). He also introduced the use of chemical reagents in classifying lichens.
