grew up in Indiana

earns PhD in plant pathology at Cornell University

1919     joins the faculty of the University of Tennessee

"He was an ardent collector and became a specialist in the fleshy fungi of the southern Appalachians. Along with Coker, he was active in developing the Highlands Biological Station, and he served as its vice-president for several years." p. 20
