Biography

1869     February 27, born in Kensington, Connecticut

1893     graduated from Oberlin College

1894     appointed instructor of natural science at Gates Colege in Waterloo, Iowa

1895     graduate fellow at University of Chicago

1896     transfers from geology to botany department when Coulter becomes botany chairman

1897     appointed to faculty of botany department, University of Chicago; starts moving up the ladder

1898     earns PhD for thesis on the vegetation of the sand dunes of Lake Michigan

1925     chairman of botany department

1935     retires

1939     September 12, dies in Chicago

Cowles was a great pioneer in studying ecosystems as a whole, and in particular studying how ecosystems were affected by their geography
