Biography
1917 earns PhD from the University of Bern, Switzerland, for his paper published as (1918) Über die Formen der Peronospora parasitica (1918). Goes to Uppsala for more study
1918 goes on a collecting expedition to the US and Southeast Asia, principally the Philipines
1919 appointed head of the phytopathological division of the Institute for Plant Diseases of the Department of Agriculture in Buitenzorg, Java
1922 returns to Switzerland and works as a botanist for the Central Agricultural Institute in Zurich
1925 appointed docent at the Central Technical Hochschule in Zurich
1927 promoted to professor and director of the Institute for Special Botany at the Central Technical Hochschule
Virtually all of Gäumann's work is considered "important" in its field, and his textbooks were the standard ones for many years. Dörfelt & Heklau says that
Gäumann's work penetrates all aspects of the developments in mycological thought that took place in the first half of the 20th century. And the spread of that knowledge took place in no little part because he provided a form in which it could be taught at the collegiate level.
