1782     April 28, born on the family farm, near the village of Dilworth (now Dilworthstown, Chester County, Pennsylvania)

works on the family farm

tutored by John Forsythe

studies medicine under John Vaughn of Wilmington, Delaware

1804     earns M.D. from University of Pennsylvania, is surgeon on a ship to Calcutta

1808     marries Catherine Lacey

1812     drafted for the war; appointed major, but sees no action

Darlington is the first American botanical biographer, and the author of two Floras of Chester County, Pennsylvania. He's not one of the great-greats of science, but he knew all the American ones, and wrote about them, and contributed solid work of his own.
