This fungus is a member of a group of polypores (the Hymenochaetaceae) that sometimes form "normal" polypore shelves with pores underneath, and sometimes form toothy crusts on the wood. The species name for this means "golden root", a reference to the bright yellow rhizomorphs that you can see in the photo.
