Hypomyces lactifluorum

Back to the Eleanor Yarrow Index

This fungus covers certain hard, acrid Russula species, rendering them palatable for the non-masochistic. The fungus starts out sort of a Halloween orange, and progresses to a deep red as it starts to produce spores. The yellowish patches on the left-hand specimen are places where the outer surface (where the Hypomyces lives) has been broken away, revealing the white flesh of the host, which has since yellowed. The white mushroom on the right shows the appearance of the host before it gets parasitized.
